概要 'Latus Rectum' plays an important role in development of treatises on the conic sections. The conic sections, i.e., the ellipses, the parabolas and the hyperbolas, are observed as the celestial orbits in the solar system. Copernicus moved the earth; Tycho observed the universe and collected the exhaustive data; Kepler analysed Tycho's data to find three laws of the solar system; Galileo established mechanics of falling bodies on earth; Descartes scrambled the solar system. Then Newton enters the scene to unify the theory for the celestial bodies revolving in the conic-section orbits around the sun as a focus. 'Latus Rectum' has been consistently a scaling measure in the conic sections but its name and definition has been changing from era to era. I shall explore the history of 'Latus Rectum' and speculate what 'Latus Rectum' is in Newton's Principia.
