概要 | A wet and heavier-than-water sphere is a model to account for behaviours of planarians, fresh water creature. They are wet and heavier than water. They move by ciliary gliding on substrata as well as the water surface. The latter feat is analysed by a sphere model. There exists a stable equilibrium among the surface tension, the buoyancy and the weight under the subtle combination between the sphere density and the wet angle. Using the equilibrium the possible sphere density is estimated: if the radius is 10mm, the surface tension and buoyancy suspend the spheres slightly heavier than water; if the radius is 1mm, the forces can suspend the spheres 2.6 to 6.7 times heavier than water. Widths of planarians are of the order of 1mm, and hence the same mechanism applies to planarians' feat on the water surface. |
