| 概要 | This study examines the impact of patent length on macroeconomic stability in the variety-expansion framework with finitely lived patents established by Judd [Econometrica 53 (1985), 567-585]. By analyzing the system of functional differential equations derived from this canonical model, we derive the necessary and sufficient condition for the local stability of the steady state. This condition reveals that patent length affects macroeconomic stability and triggers a transition between damped and divergent oscillations. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the relationship between patent length and stability can be either monotonic or non-monotonic. In the non-monotonic case, stability lost as a result of shortening of the patent length can be restored by additional shortening. While much of the existing literature on patent policy focuses on economic growth and welfare, our results highlight the importance of accounting for the implications of patent policy for dynamic stability. |
