| 概要 | This paper argues that associative plurality can stem from a functional head called "Axial Part" (Svenonius 2006, 2008; cf. Jackendoff 1996) of the adpositional extended projection. This thesis explains straightforwardly the fact that -ra and -gata (< -kata) indicate not only the spatial (or temporal) extension of what the host noun phrase denotes, but also the plurality thereof in Japanese. Metonymical relation holding between an object and the space that the object occupies plays a crucial role in rendering the Axial Part semantics into the associative one. As a corollary, the widely acknowledged functional head to govern regular nominal number, i.e., Num (Ritter 1991), may be nonexistent in the language. |
