概要  Freshwater planarians are small freeliving creatures but too large invertebrates to swim by beating the 10^{6}m long cilia. As they do not have proper muscular systems, they make use of the technique called ciliary gliding: they secrete mucus on a substratum, and glide upon it by beating ventral cilia in an antiplecticly metachronous manner. A mathematical model for this locomotion consists of the continuity of mass and the Brinkman's equation for the continuity of momentum in the periciliary layer and the mucus layer. The basic equations are split into the timeaveraged and timedependent parts. The timeaveraged part has the analytic solution set, whilst the timedependent part is solved semianalytically by use of the doubleFourier series. In the periciliary layer the flow almost creeps and the fast stream is confined near the mucus layer. Use of the typical values for the relevant parameters leads us to a paradox, for the cilium's tip speed is slower than the gliding speed itself. It is, however, possible to explain the cause of thrust by considering flip of the cilia tip owing to the buckling of the cilia.
