概要 Birds have special lungs augmented by several air sacs. The direction of the air flow in the parabronchi is against the direction of the pulmonary circulation; this configuration was once thought to constitute the counter-current relation responsible for high efficiency of gas-exchange in birds, but this hypothesis was disproved by the experiments. The counter-current model was replaced by the cross-current model: the direction of the blood flows is perpendicular to the direction of the air flows in the parabronchi. This model, however, does not match the anatomical evidence: the direction of the blood flows is not transverse to the direction of the air flows. To solve this discrepancy the new proposal is made based on the state equation of gases. This theory consists of two fold mechanisms: one is the radial-central counter gas-exchange configuration for the process between the air and blood capillaries; another is for the process of oxygen accumulation in the pulmonary veins. The new mathematical treatment is constructed by Fick's, Darcy's and Dalton's laws. The basic equations are solved analytically. The counter gas-exchange accounts for high efficiency in the avian pulmonary system, while the oxygen accumulation accounts for the experimental results without assuming the cross-current model.
