概要	There is a one-sheet manuscript called 'The transit of Mercury observed at St Helena in 1677 (Cl.P/21/3)' in the archive of the Royal Society. The handwriting analysis strongly shows that the author is John Flamsteed, the first Astronomer Royal. The first 2/3 of the contents is spent on the attempts to synthesize the geocentric observations from the data about the transit of Mercury provided by Edmond Halley and a French astronomer Jean Charles Gallet. Calculations are led to the erroneous results due to the erroneous assumptions. But it is shown that the proper treatments of the observational data pave the way to the acceptable results. The last 1/3 of the contents is calculation of stellar distances. It is shown that the comparison of the angular diameters of Mercury at the Spring and Autumn transits is possible by use of the data provided. The manuscript is the outcome of the unsuccessful efforts about the transit of Mercury in 1677 prepared 'presumably' by John Flamsteed.
