概要 After germination, Cuscuta seedlings emerge as leafless stems that grow and rotate in search of host plants. While the parasitic behavior of Cuscuta stem has been the center of scientific attention, less attention has been paid on its root development, which is also unique as the Japanese name suggests. Although a root-like structure emerges after germination, it soon withers and degenerates following a tentative lateral swelling at its lower part. This observation tempted us to hypothesize that this root-degeneration process is actively programmed so as to allow Cuscuta seedlings to attach to the ground yet to move or even fly freely and chase the host plants. To address this hypothesis, we focused on root development of C. campestris, and found that the root-like structure began to swell 24 h after seedling emergence. We characterized root morphology by sectioning followed by microscopic analysis.
